Ready to discover zeybek?

Zeybek is a powerful tradition combining dance, music, posture, manner, and cultural memory. In this section, you can discover what zeybek is, its history, culture, dance, and its characters in different regions.

What is Zeybek?

Zeybek is a traditional folk dance and cultural tradition strongly associated with Western Anatolia and Aegean culture.

Zeybek is not limited to a single dance or single sequence of figures. It exists in various forms in different regions, different dances, and different musical characters.

At Zeybek Academy, we approach zeybek not just as figures, but together with the dance's manner, posture, music, and cultural background.

History of Zeybek

The history of zeybek is a multi-layered subject intertwined with the social and cultural history of Western Anatolia.

How the concept of zeybek was used throughout history, the social position of zeybek practitioners, and how zeybek culture transformed over time have been addressed in different ways in different sources.

For this reason, rather than presenting a single story as absolute truth, we aim to convey the historical development of zeybek in an understandable way by drawing on reliable historical sources.

Zeybek Culture

Zeybek culture is not just about dancing.

Music, costume, posture, manner, regional narratives, collective memory, and the stories carried by the dances make up different parts of zeybek culture.

For us, keeping the culture alive does not mean freezing the past as it is; it means being able to pass traditional knowledge correctly to new generations and people outside Turkiye.

Zeybek Academy Approach

While teaching figures in lessons, alongside 'How is this movement done?' we also care about 'What is the character of this movement, how is it danced, and what cultural context does it come from?'

Zeybek Dance

Zeybek dance is a powerful form of expression with its unique posture, arm and body use, steps, rhythmic structure, and dance characters.

Understanding the manner, the relationship with music, and body control is as important as learning the figures correctly.

At Zeybek Academy, female and male students can dance the male zeybeks in our repertoire together.

Our Learning Approach

  • ·Correct learning of figures
  • ·Posture and body control
  • ·Harmony with music
  • ·Understanding the character of the dance
  • ·Learning without departing from tradition

Zeybek Posture

Zeybek posture is one of the most distinctive elements of the dance.

Posture is not just the shape the body takes. It is a form of expression that carries the character, confidence, and manner of zeybek.

In our lessons, alongside doing a figure correctly, we aim to be able to carry that figure in a way appropriate to the character of zeybek.

We believe that the development of body awareness and control while learning zeybek can also contribute to students' posture in daily life.

Zeybek Music

One of the important ways to understand zeybek dances is to understand their music.

The rhythm, tempo, melody, and the relationship of instruments with the character of the dance affect how the dance will be felt and danced.

This section will be expanded over time with content introducing the musical characters, rhythms, and regional characteristics of different zeybek dances.

Zeybek Dances & Regions

Zeybek repertoire is not uniform.

Tempo, figures, manner, music, and performance styles can vary in different regions and dances. These differences are an important part of the richness of zeybek culture.

In this section, we will introduce the dances in our repertoire together with their region, character, and brief story as much as possible.

Our Repertoire

One of the strongest features of Zeybek Academy is its extensive and growing repertoire. We aim to present the dances in our repertoire not just by name, but with their region, character, level, and video examples where possible.
